Event description

Description

AMA Madison's Signature Speaker Series in December brings to you a panel discussion for the very first time.

Join us on December 11, 2018 at the Madison Marriott West and hear from some of the leading non-profits - Red Cross, United Way of Dane County and Easter Seals of Wisconsin.

Non-profit marketing has changed significantly over the last decade. Marketing is no more an additional ‘task’ performed by savvy fund-raising experts. Today, non-profit branding experts use stories to create powerful emotional connections. One of the biggest differentiators in a non-profit content strategy is a true mission - a reason for existing that doesn’t boil down to “sell something”.

On the flip side, non-profits are also limited by budgets and short attention spans, when potential donors are overwhelmed with requests for money on social media, crowdfunding sites and other digital platforms.

How do non-profits achieve this balance? What can for-profit businesses learn from the non-profit marketer’s handbook?

Our panel of marketers from some of the leading non-profits will give you some ‘profitable’ food for thought.

What You Can Expect:

  • Understand how these leading non-profits use stories to create and sustain powerful emotional connections

  • Learn strategies you can use to make your for-profit brand resonate more with audiences

  • Hear about the challenges faced and how they have been overcome

About the panelists:

Justin Kern, Regional Chief Communications Officer, Red Cross
Every day, Justin Kern is able to share stories of our friends, family and neighbors who are preparing for or dealing with crisis and suffering. As the communications officer for the Wisconsin region of the American Red Cross, Justin leads a team of volunteers and staff on projects that engage the public on the Red Cross mission, from blogs, social media and videos, to TV interviews, fundraising collateral and telethons.

Prior to his role at the Red Cross, he was the marketing and communications manager at SecureFutures, a teen financial empowerment nonprofit; the lead content creator at PKWARE, a software company; and, for 10 years, a daily news and technology journalist for outlets in New York and Wisconsin. He is a lifelong amateur musician and recently submitted the final manuscript for an anthology of nonfiction stories, poems and artifacts all about Milwaukee.

Stacey Murnighan, Director, Marketing & Communications, Easter Seals
As an experienced marketing professional, Stacey has worked across multiple disciplines in for-profit and nonprofit industries. With branding as her core skill, she has built and executed project management and leadership at various levels. Stacey believes one of the main keys to successful marketing is communication within your team throughout all marketing aspects, creating a core foundation, and working together so that you can share your business’s message effectively.

Stacey is a native of Georgetown, Kentucky. She graduated in 2005 from Alderson Broaddus University, where she was co-captain of the women’s basketball team. Stacey holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in digital/visual arts with a minor in psychology. In the fall of 2015, Stacey and her husband moved from Lexington, Kentucky to Madison. Soon thereafter, she joined Easter Seals Wisconsin as the Director of Marketing and Communications. Stacey has a passion for helping others and has volunteered throughout the years with various organizations, churches, and nonprofits. Part of what drew her to Easter Seals Wisconsin is their mission.

Jocelyn Harmon, Executive Vice President of Community Engagement, Marketing and Strategy, United Way of Dane County
Originally from California, and an East Coast transplant for 13 years, Jocelyn Harmon has called Madison, WI home since 2011. A role in Brand Management at Oscar Mayer originally brought her to the area where she worked on such iconic brands as Lunchables and Oscar Mayer Cold Cuts. Prior to joining Oscar Mayer, Jocelyn worked in Brand Management on Playtex Baby Bottles for Energizer Personal Care. Jocelyn earned her MBA from the NYU Stern School of Business, worked in development at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and is single mom of a super cool 5 year old named Felix. She speaks French, plays guitar, has her BA in art history, and loves yoga, Netflix and wine. Not at the same time.

Currently, Jocelyn is the Executive Vice President of Community Engagement, Marketing and Strategy at United Way of Dane County. This return to nonprofit after 8 years in corporate America has been an enjoyable, challenging, and exciting experience since May of 2015.
