Branching Out: Providing Quality Genealogy Services @ Your Library, part 2 (two-day workshop for library and literacy staff and volunteers)
Have costs and expertise kept you from providing genealogy services at your library? Learn how to tackle those problems and discover some effective ways to offer this specialized service to your patrons. Using online databases, popular reference materials, and support from state agencies, participants will discover useful resources that will assist them in helping family history researchers. Hands-on opportunities to explore online databases will give participants a chance to learn how to locate information, and gain the confidence they need to answer genealogy questions. A class field trip to the Oklahoma History Center will also be included.
In this class you will:
- Navigate popular genealogy websites
- Search the Dawes Roll Index
- Locate someone in the Federal Census
- Locate online primary documents
- Find historical Oklahoma maps and newspapers
- Learn how to order historic photographs
- Locate Oklahoma places that no longer exist
- Print documents in Ancestry Library Edition
- Print documents in Fold3.com
Class prerequisites: 1) Attendees must be well-versed and comfortable using computers in general. 2) Attendees must sign up for both parts 1 and 2, or go on a paper waitlist with Doris.Dixon@libraries.ok.gov (405) 522-3217.
Kathy Huber, genealogy expert with the Tulsa City County Library, will teach the class.
Travel stipend for overnight stay may be available if public library, library system, tribal library or literacy organization is 60 miles or more from ODL. Initial travel stipend paperwork must be returned to ODL before the class date. Contact Doris Dixon to request paperwork via email Doris.Dixon@libraries.ok.gov or phone (405) 522-3217. Stipend will be based on lodging receipt, up to $92. If lodging charges are less than $92, the contract will be written for the actual amount, not $92. Mileage also may be reimbursed at 30 cents/mile if you are paying for your own gas & cannot collect from your library/literacy organization. Stipend contracts will be made out to the library/literacy organization. It will be your responsibility to collect your reimbursement from such organization. No travel stipend contracts will be paid until the class has been attended and photocopied proof of overnight stay (if applicable) has been submitted to the Office of Library Development.
Classes made possible by funding from The Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Oklahoma Department of Libraries.
