Event description
A meetup about psychoactive drugs - from scientists

About this Event

In 1971, US President Richard Nixon declared war on drugs and started an unprecedented global campaign to eradicate drug use. It is obvious now that the supposed goal of the campaign can never be achieved, as any willing buyer can easily have access to uncontrolled psychoactive drugs on the street all around the world. Making psychoactive substances and their effects a taboo led to misinformation, wrong doses and many deaths. The process also hindered research on these compounds by producing biased data which makes the governments’ decision on drug legislation very difficult.

In this meetup, we will to discuss what science says about the real dangers of using psychoactive substances. Anton Luf (Medical University of Vienna) and Alexandra Karden (Suchthilfe Wien) will present checkit! their drug-advice centre offering integrated drug checking and prevention work. They will talk about the general approach and analytical methods they use at parties to test drugs, and they will show the latest trends and developments of the Viennese street-drug market. Szabolcs Biró will talk about the fuction of cannabinoid receptors in the brain and the neurological effects of marijuana consumption, which might not be without danger to a developing organism.

As usual, the tickets include a free drink, snacks, interesting talks, neuroscience news, and the good vibe. The language of the event is English.
