Event description

Description

Moved by the deaths of his mother and his mentor, Johannes Brahms transformed the traditional treatment of the requiem, with its sometimes terrifying depiction of Judgment Day, into a message of comfort and serenity. He selected his own excerpts from Luther's German translation of the Bible instead of setting the established Latin text of the Requiem Mass, and he composed music that has been described as "gorgeous,"" deeply moving," and "seraphic." Reflecting Brahms' decision to communicate directly with his audience in its language, we'll perform his work in the acclaimed English version by Lara Hoggard.

Soprano Marcia Porter and baritone Dennis Jesse will join our 70-voice community chorus, the Pensacola State College Concert Chorale, and the Choral Society Orchestra. Artistic Director Xiaolun Chen will conduct.

The concert also features the jubilant "Hallelujah" from Beethoven's oratorio Christ on the Mount of Olives in celebration of the composer's 250th birthday, as well as an arrangement of Vladimir Vavilov's "Ave Maria."

Student tickets ($10) are available at the door with ID.
