About this Event

BPhil Union proudly presents the second “Pathways in Industry” seminar! This is a new initiative generously supported by BHP, Lions Eye Institute and the UWA Student Guild.

After the successes of Part 1: Engineering, we now bring you Part 2: Health and Medical Sciences! We will feature some of WA's top clinicians, researchers and change-makers from the health and medicine field in a highly interactive panel-style discussion. Food and drinks will be provided and you will have the opportunity to network after the event.

Opening address by:

  • Professor Bill Morgan, Managing Director of the Lions Eye Institute; Co-Director of the McCusker Glaucoma Centre; Chair of the NHMRC Glaucoma Guidelines Committee

Panellists:

  • Associate Professor Helen Wilcox, Head of Division at the UWA Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences; Senior Lecturer, General Practice
  • Associate Professor Fiona Pixley, Chair of the School of Biomedical Sciences Research Committee; Member of the School of Biomedical Sciences Executive Committee; former Rhodes Scholar
  • Professor Kevin Pfleger, Director of WA Life Sciences Innovation Hub; Head of Molecular Endocrinology and Pharmacology at the Perkins; Chief Scientific Advisor of Dimerix Limited
  • Associate Professor Angus Turner, Director of Lions Outback Vision; Board member of the Royal Flying Doctor Service; Head of Lions Remote & Indigenous Eye Health Unit; former Rhodes Scholar

Moderator:

  • Emma Turner, President of the Australian Dental Students Association; Doctor of Dental Medicine student at UWA; former Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) student with First Class Honours in Pharmacology

Stay tuned for a more detailed snapshot of each speaker as the event nears!

Pathways in Industry bridges the gap between the classroom and the workplace with a series of three curated panel-style seminars, tailored to the academic, professional and research interests of our BPhil cohort and wider UWA community.

Make sure you don't miss this opportunity to:

  • Gain up-to-date industry insights to make informed career decisions – particularly regarding whether to complete honours in a rapidly changing postgraduate medicine landscape
  • Know the skills emphasised in industry and how to transfer what you learn in class to the workplace, or to further research
  • Improve your employability and connect with senior leaders in each field
