Event description

Description

Please join Bay Planning Coalition for our next Government Affairs Committee meeting as we host special guest Assemblymember David Chiu (D-San Francisco) on Monday, September 23rd from 12:30-1:30PM at Cox, Castle & Nicholson LLP (50 California Street, Suite 3200, San Francisco). Asm. Chiu will share his vision for a future robust regional ferry service and opportunities to support transit-oriented development around existing and planned ferry terminals. Asm. Chiu has been a leading champion for the expansion of the regional ferry system to provide transit access to a growing number of waterfront locations, and provide commuters with a comfortable and convenient transit alternative to driving on our congested highways. We will host a discussion with the Assemblymember about the opportunity for our members to be a supportive partner in achieving that vision, and touch on regional climate resilience strategies and his work to address the housing crisis by creating a new regional housing authority.

Asm. David Chiu was first elected to the California State Assembly in 2014 and represents the 17th Assembly District, which encompasses eastern San Francisco. Since 2016, Asm. Chiu has served as Chair of the Assembly Housing & Community Development Committee. During his first four years in the Assembly, Asm. Chiu has authored 48 bills that were signed into law by the Governor. Last year, he authored a law that enabled higher density housing growth near BART stations around the region, and authored a law to fund crucial improvements to the Embarcadero Seawall to strengthen San Francisco’s resiliency to climate risks.

Before joining the State Assembly, David Chiu served as President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for six years. With a reputation as a consensus maker, Chiu was the first Board President in San Francisco history elected by fellow Supervisors to three consecutive terms, and the first Asian American to hold the post. As Supervisor, David Chiu authored 110 ordinances across a wide range of policy areas, including affordable housing, job creation, public safety, healthcare, the environment, transportation, civil rights, language access, ethics and technology.
