BOY SCOUTS

Taylor Vick makes music that is instantly comforting and arrestingly beautiful. Under her songwriting moniker Boy Scouts, the Bay Area artist has spent over a decade refining her craft, penning heartbreak confessionals over glitchy drum loops since Myspace days. It wasn’t until 2015 that Vick put together a live band and became a staple of San Francisco and Oakland lineups.

On her forthcoming album, it feels like Boy Scouts has truly arrived. Recorded and produced by Stephen Steinbrink, every element exists purely to serve the songs - the bass lines bounce and guitars are lush, but nothing gets in the way of Vick’s true superpower, her voice. Delicately layered harmonies exude an effortless grace, and make the most casual lyrics hit the hardest. There’s something so honest about her songs, they feel like late night therapy sessions with your best friend.

DICK STUSSO

That old blues hound dog Bonnie Raitt probably sang it best and most lucid in her timeless, pedestrian hit “Nick of Time”: “Life gets mighty precious when there’s less of it to waste.” And so now, her wise lyrical turn seems to be ringing true for Oakland muso Dick Stusso. When we last caught up with this Bay Area BBQ gaucho on his debut, Nashville Dreams, he’d hit that special zen layer of loserdom. He’d thrown up his hands into the folly of failure. He was the affable, bumbling red-cheeked drunk lurking around the edges of the cookout — bumming smokes, putting down all the white wine and cocktail shrimp he could get away with. But now, a couple years on, that early-30s existential dread has crept its way into Dick’s purview. With his sophomore long-player In Heaven, Stusso’s numbered human days are on his mind. Without stumbling into pomposity, Dick has taken back the wheel on his life and is doing a bit of hotdogging.

ABE HOLLOW

Abe Hollow is the songwriting project of Oakland-based composer/producer Adam Hirsch. His songs are a sublimation of his skills as multi-instrumentalist and recording engineer, his experimental tendencies toward collaboration and improvisation, and his continual obsession with family history and the mythologies of the Jewish diaspora. His self-produced debut LP A Palace in Time emerged from a process of holing up for an extended period in San Francisco’s Tiny Telephone Recording (where Hirsch is a staff engineer), unfolding and re-shaping the songs through spontaneous contributions from over a dozen of his East Bay musical comrades. The result is what one friend called “a Yiddish gothic trip”—a dizzying and serene journey through Hirsch’s interior geography.
