Event description

Description

This course is a pilot program developed to connect the dots between Use of Force and Mental Health/Crisis Intervention Team instruction. It is facilitated by Police Attorney Missy O'Linn and she has invited other subject matter experts to assist in the instruction throughout the day. This workshop will include a review of the concepts contained in the Constitutional Law Crate and the CRISIS Communications Crate and some of the other concepts Missy created that are contained in the CA POST training video entitled Use of Force: Totality of the Circumstances.

Instructors in Use of Force and Subject Matter Experts in Mental Health/Crisis Intervention Teams are dealing with two of the most high-profile areas of concern for Law Enforcement and the community at large. These distinct disciplines train law enforcement officers in concepts that pertain to some of the most high-risk, challenging type of incidents. Across the board, officers are faced with challenges on their decisions on use of force, dealing with the mentally ill and emotionally disturbed persons, while facing questions on de-escalation and whether the force “necessary.” How officers explain their decisions and actions in dealing with these issues is of paramount importance.

Providing law enforcement with a systematic approach to recalling, articulating and implementing what they have learned is critical at every stage of the process. From the field contact, to the investigative inquiry, to the courtroom both criminally and civilly - officers only get one chance to get it right. How they are trained matters! Let’s bring these two disciplines together for a day of collaboration!
