About this Event

Join us Saturday, August 3rd at noon for a special members-only Bourbon Mash Bill tasting hosted by Gary Crunkleton at The Crunkleton Charlotte. Seating is limited and tickets are non-refundable.

The term whisk(e)y in the spirits world means any distillate made from grain and aged in a barrel. There are various types of whisk(e)y created throughout the world from various types of grains. Barley is a common grain used for making whisk(e)y in Ireland, Japan, Scotland, and other countries throughout the world. Rye is another popular grain that is used for whiskey. It is common to find rye whiskey in Canada where the colder climate allows for robust crops of rye grain. Corn is the main ingredient in American whiskey and with it comes bourbon. There are three different mash bills generally used to make bourbon. The Traditional Mash Bill consists of at least 51% corn grain, about 5% of malted barley grain, and 16% or less of rye grain. The Wheated Mash Bill has at least 51% corn grain, around 5% malted barley, and around 15% to 25% wheat grain. The High Rye mash Bill is the third recipe used for making bourbon. It consists of at least 51% corn grain, about 5% malted barley grain, and 17% or more rye grain within the mash bill. Each mash bill recipe creates a flavor profile that is very different. The corn grain offers a sweet flavor. The wheat offers a bland flavor of earthiness. The rye offers complex flavors of spice.

This bourbon mash bill tasting offers three different bourbons from each of the mash bills allowing the guests to discern the flavor profiles for each. Guests will be able to understand why the bourbons taste the way they do and how they were able to create such distinct flavors. Additionally, guests will have a better appreciation for America’s favorite spirit as they experience bourbon from this perspective where various styles and qualities are tasted together in one sitting.

Lunch is included, so come hungry!
