Description

RETREET REPLANTS LYONS, CO!

Lyons, CO, is a community of about 2,000 people north of Boulder. In the 1860s, families from the eastern U.S. began settling land that had been home to the Ute Nation. Edward S. Lyon founded the town in 1881 after buying 160 acres and laying the foundation for a sandstone quarrying operation. The sandstone in Lyons is 260 millions years old and is considered the hardest in the world. Many of the historic old buildings are built out of it. Though the advent of cement brought a brief lull in its usage, quarrying sandstone from Lyons remains a booming industry.

On September 12, 2013, Lyons was severly affected by floodwater that innudated much of the front range, including Jamestown and Evans, the sites of our previous two Colorado RETREETs. All access routes to the town were blocked, and sewer and freshwater service was disrupted. The National Guard began evacuating the entire town at daybreak. 1 life was lost.

We aim to plant up to 75 trees at homes in the confluence area, where the North and South St. Vrain Creeks meet. RETREETers will make a major impact in Lyons and leave an important psychological, economic, and visual legacy that will last for generations to come. This will be our second planting in Lyons.
