Calling the Ghosts: On a Few Recent Works

Committed to deep research, Khalili develops her collaborative projects across long periods of time. When considered as a whole, the body of work she has created in the last two decades can be seen as a meditation on unconditional and radical equality. For this lecture, she will share and articulate some of her works in order to address the essential questions that her practice investigates: the politics of memory of anti-colonial struggles and international solidarity; forced illegal migrations in relation to imperial and colonial continuums; egalitarian forms of citizenship as opposed to the nation-state model of citizenry; and language, dialects, speech acts, and agency.

Born in Morocco and based in Berlin, Bouchra Khalili is a visual artist who works with film, installations, photography, and prints. She has had solo exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), MoMA (New York), PAMM (Miami), the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume (Paris), MACBA (Barcelona), and Secession (Vienna), among others. Her work has also been shown in several international exhibitions including documenta 14, the 55th Venice Biennale, the 18th Sydney Biennale, and the 10th Sharjah Biennale. A 2018 finalist for both the Guggenheim's Hugo Boss Prize and the Artes Mundi Award, she was also a Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard (2017-2018) and at the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School (2011-2013).  Some other distinctions include the Ibsen Awards, Ibsen National Theater (2017), Abraaj Art Prize (2014), Sam Art Prize (2013), and the DAAD-Artists in Berlin Program (2012).
