Play Therapy and the Autism Spectrum: Three Modalities – Three Clients – Stannard Baker, M.A., LCMHC, RPT-S

If you’ve met one client with Autism, you’ve met one client, once.” As a result, more than one play therapy modality works for clients on the spectrum. Using case presentation, this workshop describes three diverse successful play therapy modalities used with three different clients with ASD.Learning Objectives

1) Describe three areas of challenge for clients with Autism Spectrum and explain how play therapy techniques can be used to address each of these area

2) Apply at least 3 play therapy modalities that have proven successful with clients with Autism, and utilize criteria for matching modalities with client needs

3) Explain the theory of Neurodiversity and explain how it changes the understanding of and approach to working with clients with Autism in a play therapy setting

Neurobiologically-Informed Play Therapy to Address Complex and Developmental Trauma - Franc Hudspeth, Ph.D., LPC, NCC, R.Ph., RPT-S

Complex or developmental trauma can be overt or covert and are typically ongoing/repetitive. As such complex or developmental trauma should be addressed, in stages, with Neurobiologically-Informed Play Therapy that includes: (a) building on the safety and security of caregivers and community, (b) being developmentally sensitive, and (c) addressing affective-behavioral dysregulation.

Learning Objectives:

1) Explain what is meant by “neuro-biologically-informed play therapy”

2) Describe at least 3 characteristics of complex and/or developmental trauma and identify the neurobiological changes associated with complex trauma

3) Cite the components of evidence based, relationally-focused, play therapy treatments and incorporate aspects of these treatment into play therapy practice

4) Assess the level and type of complex trauma caused by varying types and durations

5) Determine and explain the play therapy course of action, frequency and length, based on assessment results, to address complex trauma

6) Formulate 2 play therapy treatment plans that address the issues arising from complex trauma
