Event description

Description

This is a two-session class: Thursday, March 22 and Thursday, March 29, 5:30 - 7:30 PM
$45 for NBNC members, $55 nonmembers

Would you like to learn to draw plants? Have you always been curious about botanical art? Want to improve your nature-illustration skills? Then join us for this 2-part workshop series on botanical illustration. The first class will cover: observing the shapes and details of plants carefully; seeing shapes in a way that translates to the page; and creating an initial, very detailed pencil drawing of your subject. The second session will cover: botanical illustration techniques for pen and ink, including stippling and cross-hatching; we’ll discuss different tools of the trade; and we’ll complete our botanical illustrations using pen and ink. You are welcome to bring a favorite pressed plant specimen, small houseplant, or high-resolution photograph of a plant that shows a lot of complex detail and structure to be the subject of your drawing. Fine drawing paper, pencils, and a couple options for art pens will be provided-- $15 materials fee per person (at the door). Ages 14 and up.

About the Instructor: Eva Dannenberg Alexander is a plant ecologist, floral designer, and flower farmer with a Master’s in Conservation Biology from Antioch University New England. She has been studying, drawing, and growing plants since she was a young child in the hardwood forests of the Green Mountains, and as a student illustrated an (as yet unpublished) field guide to Vermont’s common mosses and liverworts. Eva is fascinated by the diversity of Vermont’s flora and has a special botanical fondness for plants specialized to grow on high-calcium soils or rocks, including our rarest alpine species and some hardwood forest spring ephemerals. After many years working in the botanical and gardening community in Vermont, she now owns a floral design business and flower farm in Craftsbury Common, where she lives with her husband, pet chickens, and cats, and spends time teaching others about wild plants whenever possible!
