About this Event

Drawing is the discipline by which I constantly discover the world.

–Frederick Franck, artist

Expand your drawing curriculum to include botanical illustration during this workshop with botanical illustrator Kathleen Garness. Botanical art and illustration is the centuries-old tradition of portraying plants for scientific purposes, recording vanishing species for the historical record, and capturing the beauty and inspiration we experience in our natural world.

Under Garness’skilled guidance discover and connect with the natural world using graphite and watercolor pencils. Leave with inspiration to integrate this form of scientific drawing into your curriculum and a renewed personal connection to nature.

Garness has created illustrations for education programs and exhibitions at the Field Museum, the Chicago Botanic Gardens, and the Nature Conservancy. One of her personal missions is to use botanical art to educate people about our environment, especially the value of plants in our lives. Garness is also an early childhood specialist with 15 years' experience and a life member of the American Montessori Society. She served as co-chair of the Chicago Wilderness Youth Outreach Task Force, developing program materials to encourage young people to develop an ethic of earth stewardship.

This workshop is free but space is limited. Tickets are required.

This workshop is part of the Snite Museum's participation in the international Big Draw Festival.
