Boston Harbor [re]creation
Description
Join us for the kickoff celebration of Boston Harbor [Re]creation art initiatives on Peddocks Island. The afternoon will include a boat ride featuring music, performance art, performance photography, and interactive poetry and narrative. On Peddocks, check out the five sculptures made from the island's invasive plants, hear from the artists, and meet the Artists in Residence who will be living on Spectacle Island during the month of August.
**Boat departs from Long Wharf North at 2pm. Please arrive 15-20 minutes prior to departure.**

About the on-board art:
Excerpts of Reynaliz Herrera's theatrical percussion show "Ideas, Not Theories" features original music exploring the use of unconventional instruments including bicycles, tap and body percussion, water, brushes and drums which are linked together through a storyline and physical comedy.
Reynaliz Herrera is a professional musician, percussionist, composer and educator based in Boston but originally from Mexico. Reynaliz is the recipient of multiple awards including The National Youth Award (Mexico), The Festival Percuba´s International Percussion Competition in Cuba, The National Arts Center of Canada´s Bursary Competition, and the MTV Latinamerica “agent of change award”.
Melissa Nussbaum Freeman brings the “herstory” of the islands to life through reinterpreted historical women in original and intimate one-woman performance pieces. Informed by historical investigation and devising techniques, Melissa invites guests to meet the women of the Harbor Islands. What treasures of the past and keys to our present will these women share?
Melissa Nussbaum Freeman is a performing artist, playwright, director and activist. Melissa founded Red Sage Stories: Playback Theatre & Art for Social Change. Students from GrubStreet literary arts center's Writing for Public Space class, led by writers and multidisciplinary artists Denise Delgado and Sara Daniele Rivera, will engage with and respond to performances and the environment through written narrative, poetry, and other text-based interventions.
Sara Rivera is an interdisciplinary artist and writer. Her practice includes music, theater, drawing, sculpture, and text. She was awarded a 2013 Robert Pinsky Global Fellowship in Poetry. Her work is widely published and she was part of the 2015 Mayor's Poetry Program.

Denise Delgado’s fiction and critical essays have appeared in Inch, Hinchas de Poesía, the anthology Florida Flash; Jai-Alai Magazine, and NPR affiliate WLRN Miami, among others. Her ongoing project, Bodega Signs + Wonders, transforms oral histories into poetry, public art and business signage.
Jonathan Chamberlain offers a free black and white camera rental for visitors to use and share during their visit in exchange for their cell phones. Film will be processed on site into negatives with homemade chemistry, as a form of performing photography. Images will then be scanned and shared with participants/photographers after the event.
Jonathan Chamberlain is an educator, photographer, mixed media artist and bicycle mechanic. He earned his Master’s degree in Art & Design Education at RISD and works as an itinerant artist-educator in out-of-school programs. His studio practice focuses on finding a sense-of-place and articulating commonplace complexities in the everyday experience.
