Event description

Description

We invite you to join the Boston Education Action Network (BEAN)'s first Issue Action Team training AND kickoff for our upcoming campaigns in the latter half of the 2017 - '18 school year.

In 2016, we had over 150 community members (parents, elected officials, educators, activists, students, and all around passionate people) gather to engage in a lively discussion about educational equity in Boston. During our issue action assembly, we caucused to select the three issues that our organization will be taking action on this year.

  1. Recruitment and retention of teachers and leaders of color, while ensuring culturally relevant and affirming curriculum for all students.

  2. Ensuring social/emotional support for students, especially through actions to disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline

  3. Addressing Boston's current housing crisis, its impact on schools, and de-facto school segregation.

This meeting intends to set a common, shared mindset among current and interested BEAN members about these issues, and the actions that we can take in the next semester to allow effective research and action planning. We also will provide some initial training on our organizing model and tactics.
