Spend a day learning from the music and visual staff at the Boston Crusaders! Student Masterclass ($25) and Educator Seminar (Free)

About this Event

Middle school, high school, and college aged brass players and their educational staff are invited to spend the day with the BAC brass and visual instructional team. Attendees will receive information from world class educators and gain valuable information to improve performance as a brass musician. Plus, clinic attendees will be invited to perform alongside the Boston Crusaders hornline at the conclusion of the clinic!

Student Masterclass

Spend a day learning from the music and visual staff at the Boston Crusaders. During our one day clinic, you’ll receive instruction from world class educators and gain valuable information to improve your performance as a brass musician.

Our clinic structure will explore valuable brass fundamentals, as well as provide you with hands-on experience with the marching technique utilized by the Boston Crusaders.

Topics include:

  • “Breathing to play, not just live” - learning important breath expansion and air management exercises
  • “Creating the perfect vibration” - exploring the benefits of buzzing and lip vibration exercises, and ways to improve your craft through this activity
  • “Singing to be musical” - spend some time discovering the benefits of singing to not only activate the mind and improve accuracy, but also develop musicality
  • “Finding your beautiful sound” - we will discuss fundamental tone production, and ways to improve the clarity, resonance, and expressive qualities of your sound
  • “Articulation defines style” - the staff will discuss the infinite number of ways that detailing articulation can impact your musical message, including note fronts, backs, lengths, strengths, and multiple tonguing responsibilities
  • “Flexibility” - one of the specialities of the Boston Brass faculty explores the importance of lip flexibility as it relates to the total player
  • “It’s not how loud you play, it’s how you play loud” - simply put, learn how to play loud with a great sound

We will also put all of this information to use preparing 1-2 short tunes that you’ll perform alongside of the Boston Crusaders hornline at the end of the day.

Visual topics will focus on

  • Posture, poise, and instrument carriage
  • Lower body style and technique
  • Tempo and foot timing
  • Definition and articulation of the step
  • Poise and presence
  • Learn how to work through the challenges of combining the musical and visual responsibilities. So often, one or the other suffers.

Clinic schedule

  • 9:00am - Registration
  • 9:45am - Opening meeting
  • 10:00am - Music clinic
  • 12:00pm - Lunch
  • 1:45pm - Visual Clinic
  • 3:45pm - Music rehearsal
  • 5:00pm - Performance with the corps
  • 5:30pm - Done

Educator Seminar

Spend time with other clinic attendees watching and learning from the Boston Crusaders staff during our rehearsals and sectionals!

  • Sit in on a live BAC rehearsal while networking with local Texas educators
  • Attend with or without your students!
  • Band directors, instructional staff, and technicians welcome
  • Free professional development opportunity
