Description

In celebration of Black History Month, TechTown presents:
Boss: The Black Experience in Business: A Film Screening and Storytelling Event
In partnership with Detroit Public TV and In Good Co.Detroit

We are now at capcity for online RSVPs! There will be very limited spots available at the front door. Standing room only for walk-ins is likely.

Please join us for a night of dynamic storytelling — of journeys in entrepreneurship and of finding strength and inspiration in shared struggles and successes. We’ll begin with a screening of select segments of Detroit Public TV and PBS’s Boss: The Black Experience in Business,* which chronicles the untold story of African American entrepreneurship — where skill, industriousness, ingenuity and courage in the face of overwhelming odds provide the backbone of this nation’s economic and social growth.

We’ll hear from the City of Detroit’s Chief Storyteller and Entrepreneur Eric Thomas,** on the importance and power of preserving black spaces in the city and sharing Detroit’s stories. He’ll even squeeze in a couple Q&As!

Emcee Shannon Cason from In Good Co. Detroit, a storytelling campaign of the New Economy Initiative, will bring to the mic Detroit-based, African American entrepreneurs and small business owners to share their own stories in rapid-fire succession: leaps of faith, facing fear and holding onto hope in pursuit of their dreams.

This event is free and open to the public. Free refreshments will be provided.

Are you an African American entrepreneur or small business owner in Detroit who wants to share your story? Follow the prompts when you RSVP for a chance to step on stage. We’ll select people at random from the submissions on the night of the event. Be there and be ready to hit the stage if chosen.

6-6:30 p.m.: Arrival and networking
6:30-7:15 p.m.: Welcome, DPTV film screening, CoD Chief Storyteller Eric Thomas
7:15-8 p.m.: In Good Co. open mic stories, closing
8-8:30 p.m.: Networking and departure

PARKING: Free parking is available in the large TechTown lot on the northeast corner of Cass and Amsterdam; between Woodward and Cass; enter on Amsterdam. Street parking is available; adhere to posted signage. There is a WSU credit card pay lot on the northwest corner of Cass and Amsterdam; enter on Cass.

*Boss: The Black Experience in Business is a Firelight Films production for THIRTEEN Productions LLC in association with The HistoryMakers.

**Eric Thomas is a lifelong Detroiter and founder of SAGA Marketing
