Event description

Description

We will start with a hike (boots) then go swimming (suits) and if you want, sit around the campfire telling lies (s'mores).

This is an extended version of the traditional swim - hike. I've reserved 24 spaces (6 tent platforms) at the Corman AMC Harriman Outdoor Center (CHOC) for Friday 6/23 to Sunday 6/25 (tents must be down by 11 am). I'll be going up on Friday so I can spend two nights at the camp. The trip officially starts on Friday at 3 pm, but you are welcome to join us for just Saturdays swimming and hiking if you don’t want to spend the night. If you don’t want to spend the night in a tent but you do want to go hiking then swimming and have some dinner at the camp without spending the night that is cool as well.

The ticket price includes a tent spot, dinner on Saturday night, breakfast on Saturday (for Friday arrivals) & Sunday plus bonfires and s'mores! If you choose the Saturday Swim – Hike option no meals are included and no overnight accommodations are included in that ticket.

This will be a moderate paced 8-mile hike on varied terrain. There are a couple of places you will need to use your scrambling skills but nothing out of the ordinary. New hikers are welcome on the trip. It is a wonderful way to see what AMC is all about. New hikers will find this hike a good challenge and the scenic outlooks are a great reward for the effort. But the real reward comes after the hike.

The itinerary: Subject to change at the leader’s discretion.

Friday Night Arrivals: Optional Stay at the camp. Check-in is at 3pm dinner is at 6. Please contact the CHOC if you need to get a shuttle to the camp. They provide a shuttle service for $5.00 Dinner is optional, I know not everyone can get to the camp by 6. We will be enjoying breakfast in the dining hall on Saturday Morning. The camp will provide a trail lunch for you for about $11. It has a sandwich usually some chips and a candy bar of some sort and a piece of fruit. I find that fruit just adds weight to my pack so I will barter for your candy bar.

Saturday Arrivals for overnight and the Swim Hike: We will be meeting at a destination to be revealed upon registration. The meeting place is mass transit accessible. We are asking everyone arriving on Saturday to register their method of transportation to the camp on the group carpool site. Link will be provided upon registration. I don’t want to leave anyone sitting in the parking lot.

After everyone arrives we will shuttle to a trail head. Saturday arrivals might not have enough time to set-up your tents prior to leaving on the hike. After we hike we will return to the camp for some swimming, paddling, socializing, napping (if you have an extra hammock......) happy hour then dinner followed by an after-dinner bonfire and smores. There will be a naturalist providing a presentation of beaver activity on Breakneck Pond in the dining hall on Saturday night. It is open to the entire camp if you want to go.

Sunday Morning: Breakfast & Camp Breakdown. I will be doing a hike on the pond loop trail around the camp. It is a short 3-mile hike that will give me time to hike and hop in the lake before I venture home. You are welcome to stay and enjoy the camps facilities on Sunday after we have checked out.

Anyone who wishes to bring some food to share for happy hour is encouraged to do so.

Seems simple enough? camping, hiking, swimming, eating and a fire? What more could you ask for?

Drinking? For those of you who wish to consume beverages only sold to those who are 21 and over please do so. But be discreate and considerate.

There will be a couple of ticket options and then some add-on items for trail lunches. I don’t want anyone to starve so make sure you choose the correct meal options. These will be found on the order page. You just keep adding the meals you want until you think you will be full. Options are: Friday Dinner, Saturday Trail Lunch, Sunday Trail Lunch and Saturday Dinner. Saturday dinner is for those attending the swim hike and want to stay for the bonfire but don’t want to spend the night. Saturday night dinner is more than Friday Night because I didn’t initially charge enough for Friday night, taxes, get you every time….

The food at the camp is excellent! I attend many events there and am always surprised at how good the food is. They provide a large trail lunch that will fill you up.

Please note that there are 6 (six) tent platforms. Tickets are per person and get you 1 (one) spot on a platform. We all must share the platforms so please leave Taj Ma' Tent at home unless you are sharing the tent with others. Each platform is 10' by 12' and we need to get 4 people per platform.

If it rains we get wet. We aren't going to cancel the event.

If you are only coming for the Swim - Hike day the fee is $16.00 for members and $21.00 for non-members. If you are coming for the swim – hike and want to stay for dinner and the bonfire please purchase dinner when you check out.

Carpool information can be found at:

Cancellation Policy: Reservations cancelled more than 14 days in advance receive a full refund minus a $25 processing fee. Reservations cancelled 14 days or less in advance are not refundable. If the AMC must cancel a program, registrants will be notified and all fees will be refunded. Normal weather conditions will not cancel this program.
