Description

bookbinding workshop

Make your own leatherbound journal (Cross-structure binding)

Sunday 19 November 2017 @ 1-5pm

This workshop teaches the style of Cross-structure binding to make a journal/notebook with soft leather covers and filled with an assortment of different papers (recycled, writing, sketch or watercolour paper, coloured, translucent, or even found papers). The eco-friendly upcycled leathers provided in class come in a wide choice of colours and textures. And you are welcome to bring in your own papers for binding into the book if you wish.

The 'Cross-structure' binding technique has been around since medieval times. The sections of pages are handsewn onto the leather 'fingers' of the covers, either leaving the stitching exposed or concealing it behind a panel of leather (both styles are taught in this class - your choice of which you'd prefer to make).

Cross-structure binding enables the book to open completely flat, making it perfect for travel journals, diaries, notepads and sketchbooks. Your choice of leather, papers, and coloured waxed-linen thread will all combine to make a unique and personalised leatherbound book with true character.

This workshop is ideal for complete beginners, as well as those who would like to expand their range of bookbinding techniques. You'll be able to examine finished examples of these books, and be inspired by the variations and possibilities.

All bookbinding materials are provided as part of the workshop. And all templates and instructions are included so you will be able to make more books at home.

Cost: $85 per person
