Description

Bookbinding Core Skills: Fall 2019 Session
Four Classes, Saturdays and Sunday
October 5-6 and October 26-27, 2019
(10:00 AM – 4:00 PM)
UVa Education Benefit Eligible*

This four-part Bookbinding Core Series prepares participants to undertake a wide range of projects and additional classes in intermediate and advanced bookbinding techniques and book structures.
At the completion of the series, the Virginia Center for the Book will award a Certificate of Basic Skills in Bookbinding. VABC members who hold the certificate may use the book center's equipment for their personal bookbinding projects.

Class 1: Tools, Materials, and Processes
Saturday,
October 5
Instructor: Jane Freeman

Class 1 introduces basic bookbinding tools (bone folder, awl, punching cradle, needle, mat, Xacto knife, ruler), shop equipment (board shear, paper cutter, nipping press), materials (cover and text paper, adhesives, threads), and processes (cutting, folding, basic stitching, punching). Participants will complete three softcover books - two single-signature books and one double signature book – and an accordion book.

Class 2: Refining Basic Skills and Developing Craft
Sunday, October 6
Instructor: Jane Freeman
Class 2 employs the portfolio structure to develop skills of board cutting, working with cover materials, and using adhesives. Participants will make a large portfolio with tie closure. Then, using the hardcover portfolio structure, participants will make either a single signature journal or a notepad holder. Working through the portfolio’s complexity prepares participants for the last two classes in the series. Familiarity and independence with shop equipment and varied materials are class goals.

Class 3: Construct a Case Bound Book
Saturday, October 26
Instructor: Yolanda Merrill
Using pre-cut materials, participants will make a case bound book with sewn signatures, endbands, label window, and a cloth cover. The emphasis for Day 3 is on materials, technique, and skill practice.

Class 4: Refining Binding Skills (Class 3 continued)
Sunday, October 27
Instructor: Yolanda Merrill
Using the handouts from Day 3, participants will make a second casebound book, choosing either cloth or paper for the cover. Participants can determine the size of the book and will work through the processes more independently but with instructor guidance. Included in the Day 4 class is a demonstration of decorative cover embossing.
