Event description

Description

When we look at the United States as a whole most individuals do not think of gangs as a threat to National Security. However, former law enforcement official, military member, and University Professor Robert M.Brzenchek has been identifying dangerous gangs for years as such. Street gang, Outlaw Motorcycle Gang, and Domestic Terrorist Extremist group members have all banded together in some instances to include with ISIS and AlQaeda, he observes.

When Robert was researching for his most recent book, The Gang Life: Laugh Now Cry Later - Suppression and Prevention, he gathered from contributors and co-authors personal experiences, historical documents, government reports, real world experiences, and current events. His first exposure to gang members was in the Washington DC area while living and working there, and, not surprisingly, the area has quite a connection to both past and present development of gang members.

Robert plans to share some of the real-life stories from his book during a book signing at the American Society of Criminology conference at the Routlege publisher booth, in Philadelphia, Pa. His book documents some well-known gangs throughout the United States from real world experiences of his contributors Cassondra Flangan (Army Ret.), Xavier Beaufort (current Philadelphia Prison System Captain), Lauren Laielli (current New Jersy Office of Homeland Security, Detective), Dale Yeager (current CEO of Seraph), and Ben Mannes (former MPDC, NYPD, and DHS) to include Florida where his co-authors Ben Peiper and Garrick Ploncynski work currently as gang investigators.

Criminal justice experts have described the book as a "must read for all who want to stem the tide of gangs such as MS-13 who threaten America's national security"

The Book:

The Gang Life: Laugh Now, Cry Later examines the criminal gangster mindset and offers gang prevention strategies, using real-world examples to demonstrate a holistic approach toward combatting this surging societal problem. The text outlines the evolution of gang membership from a state of interest, to association, to hardcore, “O.G.” (Original Gangster) status, and explores the evolution of law enforcement’s multi-pronged approach to combating criminal street gang violence, from the catch and release mentality of the 70s and 80s to today’s collaboration with private organizations such as Boys and Girls Clubs.

In-depth profiles, case studies, and lengthy histories of gangs, gang members, and their transformations are provided to demonstrate the deleterious effect of gangs on society. Motivational Interviewing is posited as a possible solution for dissuading youth from joining gangs. Designed for criminal justice students and for practitioners in the field, this text offers readers a holistic approach toward predictive gang prevention from three nationally awarded educators and gang investigators.
