Event description

Description

Come out and meet Fred "Doc" Sawyer, Ph.D., at the HBCU Museum located on Georgia Avenue. Get your book autographed by Dr. Sawyer himself.

Guests can participate in an engaging conversation with Dr. Sawyer during a question and answer session and during his book signing of his new release entitled, "A Black Renegade in White America."

His book is a story about a black man living in America for many years and achieving some levels of success against significant odds. It chronologizes his life as a scholar, athlete, army officer, entrepreneur, and inventor. It lays out key events that caused him to become a renegade. It covers Dr. Sawyer’s years as a student athlete at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk and at Virginia State College in Petersburg, Virginia, during segregation in the south. It covers Dr. Sawyer’s time in the military where he received three accelerated promotions to full colonel, served two combat tours in Vietnam , and worked for some of the most powerful officials in the U.S. government. The book covers his work in corporate America at a time when racial bias were omnipresent. The book also discusses his inspiration for a portfolio of U.S. patents in the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) space, and the struggles he encountered in enforcing his patents against infringement by large corporations.
