Book Launch

Foundational Economy: The infrastructure of everyday life

Wednesday 12th September 2018 from 5.30pm – 8.00pm,

at Southwark Cathedral in the Garry Weston Library.

“This is the kind of economics that never makes it onto the City pages, the sort of politics that rarely gets into newspaper columns. Read it”. Aditya Chakrabortty,

a compelling counter-project against neoliberalism: restoring the collective foundations of everyday life” Wolfgang Streeck

Foundational economy is the most important concept that you have never heard of. The foundational encompasses material utilities like water, gas and electricity and providential services like education, health and care. Taken together, these services matter economically and politically because they are the collectively consumed infrastructure of everyday life, the basis of civilisation and should be citizen rights.

And yet this system of provision built up in the century between 1880 and 1980 is being undermined in the age of privatisation and outsourcing. The very pillars of a decent society – collectivism and universalism – are being eroded before our eyes.

How have we got here? What can be done about it? And how do we start to rebuild the Foundational Economy for the betterment of society?

Register today to learn more about the Foundational Economy and why a group of engaged citizens, active practitioners and critical academics are claiming it to be an important solution to the economic and social problems of our age.

Speakers at the launch include: Danny Dorling (Oxford University Centre for the Environment) and Rachel Reeves (MP and pamphleteer on the everyday economy)
