About Olga Rosales Salinas

Olga Rosales Salinas is a poet and nonfiction writer interested in the intersectionality and ambiguity of the roles she plays as mother, daughter, Latinx-sister, philanthropist, and fan of dry humor and martinis. Her work explores sisterhood, assimilation culture, faith, loss, dating, marriage, motherhood, and womanhood overall.

The book’s hallmark short story is La Llorona, wherein Rosales Salinas reimagines the folklore she was told as a child and places it in modern-day Watsonville, California. In the short story, we meet members of the Rivas family who are confronted with their own haunting. While this story takes its liberties with the original folklore, Rosales Salinas imagines that La Llorona was more than just a tale. She imagines her as a real mother full of loss and regret and an undiagnosed victim of postpartum psychosis.

About Laura Vrcek

Laura Vrcek mostly writes about triumphant family love. Her prose poetry and nonfiction work have appeared in Coal Hill Review, Entropy Magazine, The Fourth River, Quiet Lightning’s sPARKLE & bLINK, and on Perspectives, a storytelling segment on KQED public radio. She has an MFA in Creative Writing from Chatham University, a school in her home city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. With Northern California as her backdrop and the Rust Belt at her roots, she is writing her first book.

*All proceeds from the publication of La Llorona will contribute to the #RosalesSistersScholarship, a scholarship benefiting first-generation and immigrant students from the Central Coast of California.

*La Llorona will be available for purchase. Big thanks to our friends at Birch Bench Press!
