Event description

Description

Bolton Square, the award-winning Baltimore townhouse development designed by Hugh Newell Jacobson and built in 1967, is celebrating its anniversary on Saturday, October 7, 2017. An afternoon of festivities is planned with participation by architect Hugh Newell Jacobson and the widow of of developer Stanley Panitz, as well as city officials and architecture and urban design professionals.

Activities include self-guided tours from 1 pm to 3 pm of a number of houses that present the richness of variety designed into these modern homes in the context of the traditional Bolton Hill neighborhood. Homeowners living on the Common will open their garden gates to celebration guests, permitting them to experience first-hand Jacobson's thoughtful transitions from private to semi-private to semi-public space at Bolton Square. From 3 to 5 pm, a brief program and reception in the Common will be held for all participants, visitors, and homeowners.

Bolton Square, an early design project by Jacobson, received an award from the Baltimore chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Baltimore and the Homes for Better Living Program. In 1969 it won the Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects, the nation's highest award for excellence in architecture. And in 2007 the site was placed on the City of Baltimore list of Historic Landmarks.
