Description

FROM BODY WEATHER TO IMPROVISATION

‘Body Weather’ is a physical training method and philosophy developed by Japanese dancer Min Tanaka, which engages in rigorous investigation of the body in relation to its environment.

In this exploratory 3-hour workshop, Gretel introduces elements of Body Weather which vary between high energy work and focused observations.

The workshop format includes: ‘MB’ (an energetic workout, like a dancer’s version of aerobics, traveling across space, to music), sensory perception and imagery explorations. She then facilitates improvisational scores that incorporate the detail and nuance our bodies have derived from the Body Weather tasks, whilst also departing from them in inquisitive, playful ways.

Expect a fun, challenging and creative workshop for any level of dance expertise. Gretel's combination of Body Weather and improvisational practice develops sensitivity, spatial awareness and dynamism. We will venture outside for part of the workshop to experience these activities in relation to the local environment.

Join us for this incredible movement investigation!

Facilitator: Gretel Taylor

Gretel Taylor is a dancer, researcher and arts facilitator based in the Dandenongs, with a strong interest in ‘place’. Gretel has evolved a site-responsive practice exploring relationships between place, body and identity, both as a solo performer and in transdisciplinary collaboration with other artists and communities. Historical (postcolonial), ecological, cultural and social contexts inform her work, which spans Body Weather, dance improvisation, live art, community cultural development, walking-as-art, video and installation.

Gretel participated in Min Tanaka’s intensive Body Weather workshops in Japan in 1999 and 2000. Since then, Body Weather training has informed her dance practice and her many site-responsive performance works. Gretel has taught Performance Studies and Live Art at RMIT, Victoria University and Monash University and currently teaches Body Weather Open Training at Dancehouse. Gretel co-founded Environmental Performance Authority (EPA) in 2013, a site-specific performance group using Body Weather as their underpinning method.
