Tibetan Buddhist physicians used to say, "Of all 5000 illnesses, all but 16 are from the breath."
That makes sense when you consider our breath is directly connected to our state of mind. When we are calm, then our breath is calm and when we are excited then our breathing is excited. This is true for all our emotions. When we are angry then we breathe a certain way and when we are sad we breathe another way.
Just as our mind influences our breathing, so our breathing can influence our mind. When we sit and just feel our breath as we breathe in and out, the mind starts to calm down.
