The Bob Nicol Memorial has been established to celebrate the life and the friendship of Robert R. (Bob) Nicol. We intend to establish a fitting memorial to our friend and our brother by launching what we hope becomes an annual event – The Bob Nicol Memorial Golf Event!
It has been written, “As we think of the past and the life that has ended, we are grateful for the benefits we have received from it. And today, in the midst of sadness and loss, we resolve to pick up the unfinished tasks laid down by those who have lived, to dream anew their unfulfilled dreams, and to give ourselves to sharing the enduring qualities of beauty, joy, and love, which they shared with us.” – From the writings of Paul Irion.
Although Bob passed from this life on June 10, 2016, the impact he has made on his family, his friends, his fraternity brothers and others will live on in each of us as we “resolve to pick up the unfinished tasks…” Those who had the privilege of knowing ‘Nic’ know of his love for golf, for Frank Sinatra, for both deep and meaningful conversation, as well as, storytelling, light heartedness, laughter, and the occasional cocktail. We know of his love for his family and the way he would instantly welcome us into it. A moment in time with Bob could, and often did, turn into an ‘event’ that you remember the rest of your life. While he was one of the most gentle souls you could ever wish to meet, Nic was ferociously loyal and kind.
During college at James Madison University, Bob pledged the Eta Kappa Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity, and as they say in the movies, a star was born! Bob helped to secure the viability of Theta Chi at JMU as he served as Rush Chairman and, ultimately, President of the chapter. Those of us who swore an oath of Brotherhood remember the phrase, "Theta Chi For Life". To honor our Brother Bob, we have established this event in order to perpetuate the ideals and the traditions we learned those many years ago. Nic loved Theta Chi and he loved the brotherhood of Theta Chi.
The tournament is established with a variety of purposes in mind. First and foremost, the tournament is established to celebrate and remember our dear friend. Secondly, it is our purpose to endow a Bob Nicol Memorial Fund from the proceeds of the golf and concert event to use for causes that Bob and his family would support. As with any new endeavor, the details and the outcome will become more clear as we travel down our new, passionate journey to keep Bob's legacy enduringly vibrant.
Initially, our purpose is to simply GET STARTED. Your participation and support are so appreciated. Bob would have approved!
