Event description

Description

You were just looking for a place to spend the night on your march through the woods when you found a quaint, abandoned cabin that looked perfect. You went inside, got some z's, and then woke up to find the doors locked, the windows barred and only a mysterious book on the floor. Now you've gotta get out before it's too late.

That's right... it's an escape room.

If you've done escape rooms before, you recognize them as those giant rooms you get trapped in with only an hour to escape as you and your friends solve puzzles and crack mysteries. They were so popular, folks started inventing board game versions of them. Self-contained boxes that somehow found a way to put you in that world where you are trapped inside and need to solve puzzles and crack codes to get out.

Here's the way it works. $30 gets your team of 2-5 people into the event at the Cheeky Monkey at 7:00. Every team gets a copy of the same game called the Abandoned Cabin. We give a very brief overview on how to play and then you all open your boxes. Over the next 1-2 hours, you do what you've got to do to get out of that room. You're racing against the clock but also each other. First team to make it out gets a $50 gift card to the restaurant, with some other (slightly less valuable) prizes for second and third place too.

Don't feel like racing other teams? No worries. How much you invest in the idea of winning the competition is really up to you, and just because that first team finishes, it doesn't mean the game is over for everyone else. We won't give away any answers or end the event early, so you'll still have a chance to keep playing a great game and try to get out of that room. Done early and still feel like gaming? We're bringing a handful of games from our library themed around puzzles and mysteries, and we're bringing a few other random fun ones as well. You can hang out and play whatever you want, and if you feel like trying something new, your host is an expert in all of them. We'll be able to make recommendations and explain the rules to anything there.

Want to play but don't have a team to play with? No problem. Buy the $10 ticket for yourself (or two $10 tickets for you and a friend) and get matched with other fun-loving folks when you arrive.

So what game are we playing?

We will be playing a game from the Exit line of games called The Abandoned Cabin. This is a great game we have already play tested where the escape-room-in-a-box concept totally works. The puzzles are good in that they are not stupidly impossible and they're also not just stupid. There's a good range of difficulty level and ways of thinking about things. There are also hints you can pull at any time during the game for any given place where you get stuck, and they are just the right kind of helpful (hint 1 is pretty vague and only helps a little, hint 2 is a strong hint and hint 3 is pretty much a giveaway). If you are doing a board game escape room for the first time, most people agree this is the one to try. It also won the prestigious Kennerspiel Des Jahres award which is essentially an Oscar in the field of board games. Each game can only be played once since you'll be cutting up, writing on or otherwise ruining the cards as you go along, so they'll all be brand new specifically for your group.

We realize there's a problem with this which really stinks: If you've played this specific game before, you cannot enter the competition. It would be unfair to the other folks there and, frankly, pretty boring for you. However, we want to do more of these. So if this idea sounds fun to you but you've already played this particular game (or for any other reason you can't attend that night), e-mail us at host@playboardgameempire.com. We can add you to a mailing list to be notified about future such events and we can get a broad feel for just how much demand there is from folks who have already done this particular game before. In addition, we would point out that we are a company that runs plenty of other board-game-themed events. In October alone, we have a board game party games night, two board game speed dating nights and a Splendor tournamnent at a pizza place. Then in November we're also doing a showcase night for local game designers. And we do other stuff throughout the year. Check us out at www.playboardgameempire.com

Okay, that's all the major stuff, but here are a few other notes...

1) All sales are eligible for refund up until 48 hours before the event. After that, we're blowing your money on something awesome and nonrefundable.

2) If we do not get to 4 teams sold by the Friday before the event, we will cancel and issue everyone a full refund. We think this is unlikely, and are hoping to get more like 8-15 teams, but we wanted to include the warning.

3) Cheeky Monkey is on Lansdowne Street. It is right outside Fenway Park, and October is postseason baseball time. We have looked at the calendar a million times to be sure we are getting this right: There is almost a zero percent chance the Sox will play at Fenway that night, because even if they make it all the way to the World Series, they would host games 1 and 2, then 6 and 7 due to their win total. Meanwhile, Monday is the day off between games 5 (when the Sox would be on the road and 6 when they come home). That means that this is the unlikely (but okay maybe possible) series of events that would need to happen for the Sox to play that night: 1) the Red Sox would need to make it to the World Series, 2) There would need to be a four-day delay to the start of the World Series, pushing back the entire postseason calendar. Like we said, unlikely, but if it happens, we will problem solve and adjust accordingly.

4)There is no 4. Buy tickets already!
