TSNE MissionWorks' Better Nonprofit Management Training Series runs from October 2018 to June 2019.

Join us this year as we present workshops on essentials issues in nonprofit management such as supervision, financial management, fundraising, communications, and more! We have trained more than 3,000 nonprofit professionals on the skills needed to take the lead in their work and their careers.

Workshop Description

A nonprofit board navigates an organization’s path toward a sustainable future by creating an effective governance structure with sound, legal and financial management policies, and a plan that ensures adequate resources to advance its mission.

Board Basics: A Toolkit of Best Practices for Nonprofit Boards will explore the components of a strong board including planning, governance, operations, corporate responsibility, fundraising, and more. Participants will be asked to complete a board assessment prior to the session which will set the stage for discussion, problem solving and strategies for addressing board “pain-points.”


Learning Objectives

Participants will explore:

  • Why a strategic plan is critical to board effectiveness
  • An overview of board roles and responsibilities
  • How to recruit and retain volunteer leadership (create a board map and position description)
  • Sharpening committee effectiveness
  • Components of an effective board meeting
  • Corporate responsibility
  • A fundraising plan that will engage all board members

Target Audience

Decision-makers at a nonprofit organizations including executive directors, high-level program directors, volunteer board members, and board presidents.


About the Trainer

Vicki Burkhart has a strong nonprofit background spanning 35 years of experience at the executive director level. Her passion is people.

She works with visionary leaders in nonprofit organizations with well-articulated missions and committed volunteers that make a positive impact on the problems of the world. She advances nonprofits to the next level - including expansion to a national platform - and connects companies to key opportunities to make impact in the nonprofit arena beyond just giving.

Vicki’s areas of expertise include strategic planning, board development, capacity building fundraising, and membership development. She is recognized for her experience in merging and scaling nonprofit organizations. In addition, she currently serves as the Executive Director of Kids’ Chance of America, where she is responsible for the management and advancement of the national organization as well as its 45 state organizations across the country.

Previously, Vicki served as the Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University and Director of Alumni Relations/Executive Director of the Alumni Association at West Chester University. A seasoned major gifts fundraiser, Vicki has hands-on experience with the development of major gifts programs, including cultivation activities, coaching volunteer and staff solicitors, developing gift strategy, and creating major gifts donor management programs.

Along with her passion for nonprofit communities, Vicki is an avid entrepreneur and member of the entrepreneur community in the northeast corridor. She serves as the lead executive for the Alliance of Women Entrepreneurs in the mid-Atlantic region.

What is the refund policy?

Cancellations must be made via email at least 10 business days prior to the date of the workshop in order to receive a refund (less a $15 processing fee). Email trainings@tsne.org should you need to cancel your registration.

Unless otherwise noted, all workshops are held at TSNE MissionWorks' NonProfit Center, conveniently located in Downtown Boston at 89 South Street, Boston 02111, near public transportation. Are there ID requirements?

You will need valid identification to check in with security at the building's front desk.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, we will have a list of attendees when you arrive to the NonProfit Center.
