Blueprint for Business Success - 12 Danger Zones for Employers Series

Noon-1 p.m. (Bring your lunch!) FVCC Arts & Technology Building

February 27, 2018 12:00 Documentation, Discipline, Termination – Steps to Avoid Wrongful Discharge - Joe Schmier

Documentation is probably the best measure you can take to avoid a discrimination or a wrongful discharge charge. The adage “If it isn’t in writing, it never happened” is more relevant today than ever before. With this training you will learn:

  • Good documentation and why it matters
  • Positive approach to progressive discipline
  • Checklist to ensure employees a fair chance (opportunity) to correct their conduct
  • Strategies for protecting your company from termination-related lawsuits
  • Legal dos and don’ts giving references for past employees

March 27, 2018 12:00 Employee Workplace Privacy Rights –Stephanie Breck

A person has far fewer privacy rights at work than they do in their personal life, but entitled to some privacy at their job. This training will provide answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about privacy at work.

  • Protecting employees’ personal information
  • Boundaries of employees’ private conversations and personal belongings
  • Searches of desks and purses
  • Drug and alcohol testing
  • Privacy in Electronics Communications (social media, email, computers)
  • Surveillance cameras

April 24, 2018 12:00 Wage and Hour –Wendy Knutson

Wages and benefits are two of the most important employment related concerns for many workers. Federal and state laws concerning wages and fair pay have evolved over the years and the rules governing employee benefit plans can be difficult to understand. Wage and hour laws are meant to protect employees and ensure fairness. Our speaker will give real-world examples of wage and hour challenges and how you can solve them. You will be provided an overtime exemption audit checklist so you never make the wrong call and given an overview of key areas of employees' rights. Avoid these costly mistakes:

  • Not paying the correct minimum wage
  • Not paying overtime or improperly classified exempt employees
  • Making employees work "off-the-clock" and not paying them for it
  • Deducting for wages paid in goods, such as meals or food

May 22, 2018 12:00 Workplace Violence – Travis Brewer

*DIFFERENT FVCC ROOM: Learning Resource Center (LRC) Rooms 123 C&D

Employers have a duty to provide a secure and safe workplace. The potential for workplace violence exists across organizations of all sizes, in all industries and in all geographic locations. Active shooter incidents have seen a significant spike. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), there were 200 active shooter situations in the United States between 2000 and 2015, resulting in 578 people killed and 696 wounded. Organizations must communicate an awareness program to employees, supervisors and managers about a workplace violence prevention program and potential warning signs and risk factors. This training will help your organization:

  • Be aware of the warning signs of violence
  • Mentally prepare for “what if” situations
  • Understand company procedures about violent situations
  • Take all threats seriously
