Blue Willow by Doris Gates
January 8 or 9, 2015
We can’t wait to bring this book to life! We'll explore the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and feel of this wonderful story through prop-based discussion and creative activities, including drama, art, writing, history, geography, science, and more! (See our website for more details.) When children learn with their senses, their enthusiasm and curiosity increase, and teachable moments abound.
About this book, from Goodreads:
To Janey Larkin, the blue willow plate was the most beautiful thing in her life, a symbol of the home she could only dimly remember. Now that her father was an itinerant worker, Janey didn't have a home she could call her own or any real friends, as her family had to keep moving, following the crops from farm to farm. Someday, Janey promised the willow plate, with its picture of a real house, her family would once again be able to set down roots in a community.
Blue Willow is an important fictional account of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, and has been called The Grapes of Wrath for children. It won a Newbery Honor and many other awards.
How it works: Each four-hour LitWits workshop focuses on a single work of literature that the kids have read before they arrive. (Heavily abridged and audio versions are perfectly acceptable!)Though we encourage completion of the book before the workshop, it’s not necessary in order to enjoy our creative, immersive activities.
Ages: We don’t have age restrictions – as a parent, you know best what your child is ready for, interested in, and capable of. Having said that, we find that ages 8-12 are almost always "ready to LitWit"!
Time and Place: Our workshops are held on scheduled Thursday or Friday mornings from 9:00-1:00 on the campus of Vintage Faith Church at 350 Mission Street, Santa Cruz, upstairs in the Children & Youth Building. The Abbey coffeehouse is right next door, if you’d like to jumpstart your four hours of free time!
Cost for each 4-hour workshop: The cost of each workshop includes all supplies and snacks; children bring their own lunch. If you are registering one child, each workshop is $65. If you are registering siblings for the same workshop, each workshop is $60/child. LitWits Workshops is an approved vendor for Ocean Grove Charter School. Please register before requesting a purchase order, to hold your child's space.
Cancellation policy: We'll happily refund your payment if you cancel your registration a week or more before the workshop, when we can still call in our wait-listed friends. We know you don't always have a week's notice due to last-minute emergencies, so we'll happily offer you a makeup if you cancel within a week of the workshop. There are no refunds for no-shows, as we've already purchased materials and turned away wait-listers. Hope that makes sense and seems fair! We appreciate your consideration.
Making great books a memorable, hands-on experience for kids!
LitWits makes literature an experience kids won’t forget -- which leads to incidental, natural learning. Our workshops are joyful immersions in the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and feel of a single pre-read book. Learning happens through prop-based discussion and creative activities, including drama, art, writing, history, geography, science, and more!
When children learn with their senses, their enthusiasm and curiosity increase, and teachable moments abound. LitWits has been seizing those moments since 2010.
