Event description

Description

Length: 4.2 miles round trip
Hike Rating: Moderate; 4.2 miles round trip with 200 ft elevation gain
Guide: John Magee, FANs Member
Start time: 10:00 a.m. at Creekside City Park in Sisters
End time: 3:00 p.m. at Tamolitch Blue Pool Trailhead

Drive to the trailhead will be along one of Oregon’s Scenic Byways, and the hike follows a portion of the designated Wild and Scenic McKenzie River, through old growth forest, leading to the Blue Pool with its gorgeous sapphire color. Along the drive to Tamolitch Blue Pool Trailhead, we will take a bathroom break, and go for a short walk to a viewing platform for a view of 120-foot Sahalie Falls.

From Tamolitch Blue Pool Trailhead, our first 1.35 miles of the trail is along the rushing, beautiful, clear McKenzie River, and the final 0.75 miles climbs away from the river and through a lava field before popping out on the pool’s rim.

Notes:

Sturdy shoes or boots are required for the hike across the rough and rocky lava field.

Please bring plenty of water, and snacks for lunch at Blue Pool.

Tamolitch Falls is dry this time of year. The river bursts forth into Blue Pool at the base of the now dry falls.

Driving directions:

The driving distance from Bend to the Tamolitch Blue Pool Trailhead is approximately 70 miles. We will first meet for orientation and possible carpooling in Sisters at the Creekside City Park located just before driving into downtown Sisters. From the highway 20/126 junction just east of Sisters, make the first immediate left into the park. From Sisters, we will drive approximately 40 miles to the Tamolitch Blue Pool Trailhead. Traveling along highways 20/126 from Sisters, we will make 2 major left hand turns to stay on 126 following the signs toward Eugene.

If you have questions or would like to carpool from Crooked River Ranch, please call John Magee at (831) 521-4305.
