Description

So, you’ve written a book, or maybe you just have an idea for one floating around in your head. Wherever you are in the process, this workshop will help you prepare your work for submission.


Topics will include:

Write it:


Writing exercises to get the creative juices flowing

“The book hook” – why your first sentence is so important


Fix it:


“Grammar police” – common mistakes you may be making

What to do before you submit your work


Sell it:

Drafting a query letter

Why you need a platform to sell books and how to build one

“It’s not you, it’s me” – Reasons you might get rejected

A "book hook" or query letter consultation with one of our staff


Bring laptops or pencil and paper.


Blue Ink was founded in 2015 and specializes in publishing books by local authors.

Bios:


Amanda Gawthorpe has a BA in English from North Carolina State University. Before joining local publisher Blue Ink Press as Senior Editor, she spent many years working as a freelancer and as Lead Editor at a Seattle-based publishing company. She’s also been a judge for the Independent Book Publishers Association annual Benjamin Franklin awards.


Stephanie Douglas graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BA in Journalism and Mass Communication with a concentration in English.


Christa Leonhart has a BA in English Literature from North Carolina State and has previously worked as a news desk editor and as a freelance copywriter.


Sherry Torgent has a BS in Business Information Systems from UNC-G. She serves as the Publishing Manager for Blue Ink Press. She's also an award-winning YA author. Her novel Dandelion on Fire won the 2016 Benjamin Franklin IBPA gold medal for teen fiction, and her novel The Curse of Viola is a 2016 Foreward Indies Book of the Year Finalist in teen fiction.
