ABOUT THIS ART PROJECT
Blooming Rainbow (꽃피우는 무지개) is an art project for children where the imagination of a group of Korean and American artists has merged together to become a reality. The project began when artists reached out to Changwon City officials after learning that there was the Baltimore -Changwon City Sister Committee (BCSCC) in Baltimore, Maryland, and a corresponding effort in the Changwon City International Department to bring the two cities together.
During 2021-2022, artists are conducting “Blooming Rainbow” — a collaborative class with children, 5-15 years old, in Baltimore and South Korea to create abstract painting jointly together. In this program, children paint scribbles — they can express their feelings, impulsion or their favorite figures. The scribbles are then exchanged with the artists in Baltimore and Korea, who overlap color onto the scribbles. The children learn about the sister cities of Baltimore, Maryland USA and Changwon, South Korea, and learn about abstract art concepts and artists.
The program is coordinated by artists Ara Ko, Jack Koppert, and Huaqi Liu (graduate students in MICA’s LeRoy E. Hoffberger Painting MFA Program in Baltimore) and Chaeyeon Hong, Yongeun Kwon and Jaeeun Kim, from Ewha University in Seoul, South Korea (who travel to Changwon to teach their group of students).
They have planned an exhibition of the Blooming Rainbow project artworks in the United States and an exhibition in Korea as part of an exchange community art project for children.
During the opening event: Certificates of Recognition from the Mayor of Changwon City and Baltimore City will be presented to the 6 artists who are mobilizing the power of the arts to connect with communities in Baltimore and Changwon. Dami Soh Schlobohm and Jiyoung Finn will play a cello duet for the songs "Over the Rainbow" and "The Calling - Arirang".
