ABOUT THE BANDS
Rich Mattson & The Northstars
Electric Car * Duluth to Two Harbors
Rich Mattson is a Minnesota singer-songwriter and musician recognized for his work leading rock and roll/Americana bands the Glenrustles (1988-1999), Ol’ Yeller (2000-2012) and the Tisdales (2008-2014). He is also recognized for his studio work at Sparta Sound in northern Minnesota, and Flowerpot (Minneapolis 1991-2005), where along with producing his own albums, he has recorded literally hundreds, if not thousands, of artists.
Red Mountain
Electric Car * Two Harbors to Duluth
What began as an avant-garde electronic group in 2007 slowly evolved into the ever-extemporaneous Total Freedom Rock, in collaboration with members of Haus Meeting and Iamtheslowdancingumbrella. In 2009, AJK returned to performing shows as RED MOUNTAIN as a pop duo with Bob Monahan, AKA Peter Pain. These shows, performed primarily with 1980s Casio keyboards, contributed to the birth of a new type of percussive ballad-style pop that Red Mountain would eventually adapt as their own.
Gaelynn Lea & Al Church
Acoustic Car * Duluth to Two Harbors
Classically trained violinist and songwriter Gaelynn Lea has been bewitching scores of fans with her experimental and ambient takes on fiddle music, an approach that incorporates her love of traditional tunes, songwriting, poetry and sonic exploration. Her work most recently won NPR Music’s 2016 Tiny Desk Contest, a competition drawing submissions of original songs from more than 6,000 musicians across the country.
Erik Berry & Ryan Young
Acoustic Car * Two Harbors to Duluth
Mandolin and Fiddle extraordinaires known for their high-energy performances with the band Trampled By Turtles. Both artists have helped to push the boundaries of their respective instruments and have gained national recognition for their abilities.
Kyle Ollah
Million Dollar Bash Car * Duluth to Two Harbors and back
Kyle Ollah is a young artist with an old soul. He plays old-timey original acoustic banjo and fiddle music in the vein of folk greats such as Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Leadbelly.
The Boomchucks as The Freewheelers
American Legion * Two Harbors
The Boomchucks are comprised of Duluth songsmith Jamie Ness and drummer/harmonizer Brad Nelson (Black-eyed Snakes, Father Hennepin). The duo drive a foot-stomping rhythm that pulls people out of their seats and onto the dance floor. They recently released their sophomore album, Antidote. This annual set as “The Freewheelers” is their chance to showcase their appreciation of Bob Dylan’s incredible catalog.
