Reframing Perceptions of Mental Health in America

Be Vocal Logo

Nearly 44 million American adults—or 1 in 5 Americans—are affected by a mental health condition in any given year. Yet, as a society, we are afraid to talk about it. This silence can have devastating consequences, perpetuating the idea that mental illness should be hidden, which ultimately keeps too many people from getting help. Be Vocal: Speak Up for Mental Health aims to change these perceptions by sharing powerful stories of hope and resilience.

On Saturday, June 24th from 10:30–11:30am (Flagler/Gilchrist room), join us for a special screening and discussion of Beyond Silence, a Be Vocal film following three individuals as they work to break through the silence often associated with mental illness. A panel discussion will follow featuring Emmy-nominated director Shaul Schwarz and the documentary cast—Jeff Fink, Lauren Burke and Lloyd Hale—three unique individuals who share one common experience, their lives have been transformed by speaking up for mental health. Executive produced by Demi Lovato in partnership with Be Vocal and Getty Images/Verbatim, Beyond Silence celebrates the strength of these courageous individuals, ultimately weaving together a story about how speaking up is key to living well.

Beyond Silence is the latest feature of the Be Vocal initiative—a partnership with multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and mental health Demi Lovato, the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, The Jed Foundation, Mental Health America, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the National Council for Behavioral Health and Sunovion Pharmaceuticals Inc.—encouraging all Americas to speak up for mental health.
