Block Party at the Jazz Lot
945 Florida Ave. NW
Happy hour drinks & food starting @ 4
Braxton Cook Quartet @ 7
Butcher Brown @ 8:30
Marc Cary's Rhodes Ahead @ 10
Join CapitalBop for our first modern jazz Block Party, presented in partnership with Union Kitchen. We're bringing a handful of cutting-edge, danceable jazz bands, and the Kitchen is providing a fleet of food trucks and full bar service. It's all happening in the empty parking across from the 9:30 Club (steps from U Street), which recently housed the District Flea market.
The music at this show is focused on dancing, and on jazz’s evolving relationship with electronic music: Headliner Marc Cary uses his Rhodes Ahead project to explore the connections between jazz, go-go, funk, electronic dance music, house and hip-hop. Cary grew up playing in go-go and jazz bands around the D.C. area before moving to New York and touring the world with Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln, Roy Hagrove and others. At this show he performs across the street from the 9:30 Club, and just steps from U Street, Rhodes Ahead will be joined on the bill by two up-and-coming bands that have roots in D.C. and have recently begun playing around the country: Butcher Brown the Braxton Cook Quartet.
