Event description

Description

The Blinn House Foundation cordially invites you and your guests to our annual Dr. Robert Winter Award Champagne Brunch at the historic 1905 Edmund B. Blinn House, home of the Women's City Club of Pasadena. This year we are proud to recognize and honor Harvey and Ellen Knell, owners of the renowned 1907 Robert R. Blacker House, designed by architects Charles and Henry Greene.

ABOUT THE EVENT:

The Dr. Robert Winter Award is one of the most popular Blinn House Foundation events of the year, and includes a champagne reception, decadent brunch, and the award presentation. Proceeds go directly toward preservation of the 1905 Blinn House, designed by Chicago-based architect, George Washington Maher, in the Prairie School Style. The Blinn House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is designated as a Historic Resource of the State of California, and a Cultural Heritage Landmark of the City of Pasadena.

ABOUT OUR HONOREES:

This year's honorees, Harvey and Ellen Knell, were chosen in recognition of their stewardship of the beautiful Blacker House. The Knells purchased the home in 1994. By that time the home was suffering from deferred maintenance, original Greene and Greene designed furniture, art glass, and lighting fixtures had been sold, and the surrounding gardens significantly reduced through the parceling and sale of various portions of the original five acre estate. One of the "Ultimate Bungalow" masterpieces of Greene and Greene obviously needed stewardship. "It was immediately obvious when you walked in and saw the naked light bulbs. In a funny way, that was what motivated me to buy it. The house needed to be saved." said Ellen in an article published in Old House Interiors. Piece by piece, they restored and resurrected the home to its original splendor, with the help of many skilled craftsmen including last year's Dr. Winter Award Honoree, Jim Ipekjian, who supervised the restoration work.

ABOUT THE BLINN HOUSE FOUNDATION:

Since 2004, the Blinn House Foundation has recognized and honored individuals who have contributed to the appreciation and preservation of local historic resources. Past awardees are Claire Bogaard, Ted Bosley, Bill Ellinger, Tim Gregory, Peyton Hall, Mic Hansen, Jim Ipekjian, Bob Kneisel, John Merritt, Sue Mossman, John Ripley, Ann Scheid, and Dr. Robert "Bob" Winter himself.

ABOUT DR. WINTER:

Dr. Robert Winter is one of California's leading architectural historians. He is the Arthur G. Coons Professor of the History of Ideas, Emeritus, at Occidental College, Los Angeles. He is particularly known for his contributions to the history of the California branch of the Arts and Crafts Movement.

He received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. Early in his career he taught at Dartmouth, Bowdoin, and the University of California, Los Angeles. He joined the Occidental faculty in 1963 and retired in 1994.

Winter is the author of numerous books including The California Bungalow (1980), American Bungalow Style (1996), and Batchelder Tilemaker (1999). In addition, he co-authored the enormously popular An Architectural Guidebook to Los Angeles with David Gebhard.

In 2007, Winter was named a Fellow of the international Society of Architectural Historians. Dr. Winter was also a member of the Pasadena's Cultural Heritage Commission, which designated the Blinn House as Pasadena's Cultural Heritage Landmark No. 16 in 1977.

Winter lives in Pasadena in the Ernest Batchelder House that formerly belonged to the tilemaker and his wife Alice Coleman.

Please join us in honoring the Knells and supporting the recognition and preservation of our cultural and historic resources in the Pasadena area.
