Event description

Description

The Portsmouth Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. invites students and their parents/caregivers to join us for our educational enrichment and social activism event, BLERDLAND: Enrich & Empower. Our interactive pop-up STEM tent will keep youth ages 5–12 years of age mentally engaged while older youth and parents/caregivers receive transformative educational information and insightful guidance to inspire servant leadership. Sponsored by Star Pointe Academy, the interactive pop-up STEM tent offers engaging activities: architectural engineering challenges, design thinking inventions, digital microscopy, and chemical reactions.

Our educational presenters will provide tools and information to supplement traditional education with curated opensource online content to prepare for the demands of the next century, college prep skills in the digital/social media era and scholarship preparation.

Our social activism presenters will cover topics like how to advocate for one’s own rights and on behalf of others, the importance of servant leadership, how to groom young people and parents for public service, running an organization, public speaking, how parents and students can serve on boards, commissions, and in government.

We are excited to have the support and participation of local leaders in our community as our presenters:

  • Host-Jordan Brown, Founder/CIO Inspired One Enterprises and Podcasts
  • Dr. Okema Branch, Assistant Superintendent of Franklin City Public Schools
  • Brena Daniels, Principal/Founder of Star Pointe Academy
  • Arthur Kelly, M.A.—Access Advisor / Head Coach Girls Basketball—Indian River HS
  • Clarence Scott, Talent Acquisition Specialist—Smithfield Foods, Inc.

  • Paige Cherry, City Treasurer—City of Portsmouth
  • Cynthia Morrison, Clerk of Circuit CourtCity of Portsmouth
  • Don Scott, Don Scott Law
  • Tamara Shewmake, School Board Member—City of Portsmouth

It is our goal to inspire students to pursue their passions, encourage social activism and engage young students and parents that see the needs of underrepresented voices in our community.

Panelists do not represent the official views of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., its chapters nor Tidewater Community College. BLERDLAND is not authorized nor funded by any candidate or campaign and does not endorse any candidate.

*This event is free to the public. Space is limited—only registered students and parents/caregivers will be able to attend the event or participate in the STEM Activities, so please sign up for an appropriate ticket category.
