Event description
Create handmade paper artworks with materials that tell your personal history.

About this Event

In conjunction with the exhibition Paper Borders: Emma Nishimura and Tahir Carl Karmali, artist Tahir Carl Karmali will lead a papermaking workshop on Saturday, December 7, 1–4pm. This workshop will be held on the 12th floor of 508 West 26th Street, the same building as IPCNY.

Karmali’s work incorporates government-issued documents that trace family history—from paperwork showing his family’s change in citizenship after Kenya's 1963 independence from Britain, to his own visa application to relocate from Nairobi to New York. Combined with photo-transfer and collage, his works unfold a layered, material record of lived experience.

We invite participants to bring their own materials to the workshop so they can shape and share their own personal stories into pulped paper artworks, in the spirit of the holiday season. A list of compatible materials is below, and will be sent to all who RSVP for the workshop again in advance of the event. IPCNY will also provide a variety of materials.

Tickets are $10, or free for IPCNY members. Are you interested in becoming a member? Read more at ipcny.org/join.

Read more on Paper Borders, on view through December 18, at ipcny.org/paperborders.
