Event description

Description

The #BlackExcellenceTour is a collaborative social justice project created by CeCe McDonald and Joshua Allen that uses art, activism, and awareness to combat issues of systemic oppression faced by trans, gender nonconforming, and queer people of color.

CeCe McDonald is an activist, speaker, and icon in the LGBTQ community. Rising to international recognition after surviving a white supremacist and transphobic attack, CeCe has graced stages across the country where she uses storytelling to articulate the personal and political implications of being both black and trans. She fosters important conversations around mass incarceration, sexuality, and violence. She is also the star of the recently released feature length documentary about her life and story: Free CeCe!

Joshua Allen is an organizer and abolitionist whose work revolves around issues of race, gender, and policing. Their work of coordinating direct actions, movement building, and analyzing the intersections of race and gender has been featured in nearly every major news outlet in the United States. Joshua is heralded as leading the cutting edge of new racial and gender justice movements for a freer society. As a result, they have been invited to organize, speak, and workshop in countries around the world.

The #BlackExcellenceTour workshop is an informative, multi-media workshop that uses interactive exercises and group caucuses to have necessary conversations about identity, and how it pertains to violence, incarceration, power, and privilege. The #BlackExcellenceTour seeks to build awareness, justice, and power in any way possible.

Accessibility Note: Room 504 is located on the 5th floor of The Diana Center and can be accessed via elevator. The building and room are both wheelchair accessible via the 117th St. and 119th St. entrances to Barnard campus. Gendered and gender-inclusive restrooms are available on the same floor. Unfortunately, because we are a student group, there will be no interpretation services, childcare services, or transportation coverage available.
