18-year-old Nia Wilson was brutally and fatally stabbed at the Oakland MacArthur BART station on July 22, 2018. Nia's sister, Lahtifa, was also stabbed and survived the attack. One third of all tickets sales will go directly to Nia and Lahtifa's family. Additional donations may be made at checkout.
Black to Yoga is a yoga extravaganza created by people of color, for E-V-E-R-Y-B-O-D-Y! Our mission is to bring health and wellness to our community through the transformative power of yoga. Come and celebrate with us as we move, breathe, flow to our favorite music. Every background, every gender, every body size, every generation is welcome. Classes are accessible for all levels - great for beginners!
Each of the following teachers will teach a signature one hour segment. You are welcome to take any 1, 2, 3 ...or ALL of the classes with the purchase of 1 ticket.
8:00 AM: Rondy - Rondy Isaac completed two 200hr RYT certifications. His first certifications was with Jillian Gilkbarg of the ParaYoga lineage and the second with Jonathan Rickert power style yoga. His continuing educational studies include: Sutra philosophy with Anirudh Shastri, Tantra Yoga and The Path of Beauty and Bliss with Rod Stryker founder of ParaYoga, and alignment with Ben Thomas. Rondy recently lived in Stuttgart Germany for 6 months last year, through the BR-IA protect (Brazil for Refugees/Integration through Art) offering free yoga classes for Syrian, African and Albanian refugees. Rondy's class at Black to Yoga will be a tweener. Halfway between Vinayasa and Power yoga. Format will be a traditional Vinyasa style class with some power elements thrown in (breathe, arm balances deep stretches). Music yes! Sun salutations yes! Meditation and Savasana yes! 9:15 AM - Kelly (@kellyashleyyoga): Kelly Byrd is a vinyasa & yin yoga teacher for adults and teens and an avid traveler, concert-goer, and snowboarder. Her passion for yoga practice and instruction is driven by a desire to improve the physical, mental and emotional well-being of herself and others - particularly office workers and those who may otherwise never learn about yoga philosophy or practice. Kelly takes pride in sharing the many benefits of this practice that she continues to experience - physical, psychological and spiritual. She believes that the power of your practice can make any problem more manageable. Kelly will help you start your day with an all-levels special combination of vinyasa and yin yoga set to a playlist of R&B. Practice will begin with Sun Salutations and standing poses and end on the floor in restorative postures. *Note - this class will be photographed.
10:30 AM - Shakira (@sincerely_scott): Building strength, the mind/body connection and flexibility, are just a few of the realms we will explore through a mindful vinyasa flow to 90s R&B, alternative music, reggae, jazz with a splash of meditative sounds. A mixed level class that offers modifications and adjustments based on one's own practice. Postures both powerful and restorative send the student traveling through asanas linked to their inhales and exhales. Practice ends with pranayama and meditation. *Note - this class will be photographed.
11:45 AM - Maureen (@moga.is.yoga): Class has a Vinyasa flow base: "vinyasa" means "to place in a special way." In vinyasa flow classes, we seek to match the breath with the movements of the body. Class will also introduce concepts from Afrikan Kemetic Yoga. Kemet is the original name for the African country now known as Egypt. Kemetic yoga stresses the conservation of movement - no movements are wasted. Class will be lively and set to ambient music, soul and old skool hip-hop! Excellent intro for those new(er) to yoga or who prefer a slightly slower-paced format. *Note - this class will NOT be photographed.
1:00 PM - Zen (@inwithzen): Zenovia brings a fitness-based approach to Vinyasa style flow, playing rhythmic and expressive tunes that motivate. Students will focus on linking conscious breath with a dynamic and mindful flow in addition to building strength, flexibility and concentration. You can expect a judge free space filled with fun energy and a great cardio & strength building workout combined with calming the mind and breath work. *Note - this class will be photographed.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
Please bring an ID for Check-In. No specific age on the attendee but must be mature enough to withstand a 60 minute yoga class.
What can I bring into the event?
Encouraged to bring your own yoga mat, there will be a limited number of mats, blocks and straps available for use. Please dress in comfortable clothes. A water bottle is also a good idea.
