Event description

Description

The Los Angeles Black Worker Center has partnered with The Satterberg Foundation to present "Black to the Future". This Afro-futuristic adventure is a guided tour of key sites that tell the story of Black Angelenos’ future-making from the 1700s to the current day and beyond. What did they face and how did they face it down with strategy, joy, and power. Regina Freer, a professor at Occidental College who studies and writes about Black Los Angeles will guide us as we learn about Biddy Mason’s journey through enslavement to land ownership, Charlotta Bass and the fight to end restrictive covenants, Buddy Collette and the integration of the Musicians’ Unions, the Black Panther Party headquarters, Nipsey Hussle’s Marathon, and the role that community organizing plays in sustaining and deepening these legacies.

Come ready to interrogate the social construct of time, but don't be late to hop on board at one of two pick-up points: one at Leimert Park @9am and at The InterContinental Hotel Downtown LA (900 Wilshire Blvd @10am). $60 per person (Complimentary Entry for Southern California Grantmaker's Foresight Philanthropy attendees. The half-day bus tour (approximately 5 hours) will include a delicious lunch. To RSVP, contact Janel Bailey at 323-752-7287 or email jbailey@lablackworkercenter.org.
