Set in Pittsburg, PA, 1911, the play follows protagonist Herald Loomis, who, after seven years' of forced labor on Joe Turner's chain gang, arrives at a black Pittsburgh boardinghouse as a free man. Although free, the mental scars of his enslavement and physical alienation during his imprisonment still oppress his spirit.
He spends the bulk of his time trying to locate and reconnect with the family he was separated from when he was stolen. Through his encounters with the other residents he begins to realize that what he truly seeks is his rightful place in the world.
