**Our Sunday, October 22 event is SOLD OUT. Please join on Sunday, November 19**

Our Special Invitation to You...

We're on to something and we hope you can join in this journey. Confronted with the inequities and disparities observed in American agriculture, co-hosts Trevor and Ashley, set out to balance the scales. The mission of Black Soil: Our Better Nature is to connect black families in our urban and rural communities with black farmers and producers across the state. Our vision is to help foster a greater marketshare for black farmers and producers as they provide healthy food options to a larger consumer base.

Why?

Spurred on by 2012 USDA Farm Census data which states:
*Out of 113,037 farms operators, 616 were black. This small but mighty force represents .5% of the sector in the state of Kentucky.
*Currently, 505 out of 77,064 of the farms in Kentucky are operated by black land owners.
*Average farm size for black farmers was 80 acres totaling 40,446 across the Commonwealth.
*Black farms averaged 31% less in their average market value of products sold. Statistics reflect $20,181 average per farm for black farmers compared to $65,755 for non-black farmers.

Knowing this, Black Soil: Our Better Nature, was developed to confront the troubling reality surrounding power dynamics of land ownership, food security, and institutionalized racism.

As You Consider Our Invitation:

These intentional visits to black owned farmland are designed:
*To spur relationship. Step out of your geographic comfort zone. Meet new people and reconnect with old friends.
*Stimulate economic development. Celebrating cooperative economics, this series aims to activate black dollars within black owned agricultural assets. Take advantage of the fresh produce and community shared agriculture or CSAs presented by Andre Barbour of Barbour's Farm and Tehran Jewell of A Taste of Jewell Farms, the farmers represented on our 2017 tours.
*Develop an appreciation of our natural environment. Connecting with the environment and natural resources highlights a deeply rooted cultural heritage centered around land.
