Event Details

A founding and current member of the world-acclaimed Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, the singer-producer-filmmaker Black Nature moved to San Francisco and started the Black Nature Band in 2011. The group performs his original, positive music that incorporates a unique blend of African rhythms, reggae, dancehall, rock, hip-hop, and R&B. They have toured much of the West and Southwest, from California through Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.

Black Nature grew up singing and playing percussion in his homeland, Sierra Leone. In the midst of the country’s brutal 10-year civil war, he fled to neighboring Guinea, where he was placed in a refugee camp. There he and other musicians put together a band, handmaking their own instruments, and entertained fellow refugees. In 2002 they met filmmakers who documented the band’s experiences in the award-winning film “Sierra Leone’s Refugee Allstars” (it’s available on Netflix), and the band spent the next nine years touring internationally to great acclaim, paying major festivals from San Francisco’s Outside Lands to Bonnaroo, Central Park Summer Stage in New York, and Fuji Rock in Japan, as well as the World Economic Forum in Geneva and Save the Children in New York. While the rest of the All Stars returned to live in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Black Nature moved to the Bay Area. In addition to his appearances in such world-oriented bands as Sila and Rupa & the April Fishes, he and his band are hard at work on their first recording project.

The Afrofunk Experience has been performing its African-diasporic music for 15 years, bridging the funk, rock, and jazz of black America with Nigerian Afrobeat, Central African soukous, Afrorock, Jamaican reggae, Colombian cumbia, and more. The band boasts musicians with lifetimes of music experience: guitarist-singer David James (Spearhead, The Coup) brings his sinewy style to counter the funk-metal stylings of lead guitarist Ken House (H.P. Riot). The precise funk-rock drumming of Paul Oliphant (Afrolicious, Will Magid) and Wendell Rand’s (Afrolicious, Tracorum, Youssoupha Sidibe) muscular bass grooves keep the band tight, while saxophonist David Boyce (Broun Fellinis, Supplicants) and trombonist Alan Williams (Manicato, Katdelic) wail, their horns producing a sound that encompasses outward-bound jazz, classic reggae, Afrobeat, and R&B. Percussionist Brandon Lee thickens and adds flavor to the mix, and on top of all this, Sandy House adds her sultry voice and powerful stage presence.

The Justin Ancheta Band is a positively-charged, high-energy band from San Francisco. The musicians bring together exotic world sounds with some heavy doses of funk and reggae, lacing socially-conscious lyrics with horn, violin and guitar melodies over a steady foundation of drums, percussion, and bass. Oakland guitarist-singer-composer Justin Ancheta has taken his music across the U.S. and Europe, touring by train and bicycle, performing from Hawaii’s Spirit Festival to Barcelona’s first Bicycle Music Festival.
