FAQ:
Time and Location:
The parade starts at 12:30pm sharp at 14th and Harrison in Downtown, Oakland.
If you are in the parade, line up begins at 10am at Jackson and 14th. Please look for the tables to receive your line up information.
The parade ends at 20th and Broadway where it will funnel into the celebration site.
Street Closures and Construction:
The parade assembly area will be closed to all moving vehicles from 10am-2pm on Sunday, 2/23/20 - the day of the parade! This includes: 14th between Webster and Jackson, Harrison between 15th and 13th and Alice between 16th and 13th.
The parade route will be closed from 12:30pm-2pm on Sunday, 2/23/20.
This includes 14th between Webster and Broadway, and Broadway between 14th and 21st.
The celebration site will be closed starting Saturday, 2/22 at 4pm until Monday, 2/24 at 6am.
This includes: Franklin between 22nd and 19th, Webster between 22nd and 19th 21st between Broadway and Kaiser Plaza and 20th between Broadway and Harrison.
As you may know, Broadway Street has been under construction for the past couple of months. There are two specific areas with heavy construction: 14th & Broadway and 19th & Broadway. At these two points, the street is narrowed significantly. Please pay attention to where you are stepping, riding and driving. The turn onto Broadway Street from 14th is quite tight, so please drive slowly and stay alert to those around you. We will have volunteers stationed at both of These points to ensure safe passage through the construction areas.
Getting There:
We strongly recommend taking BART to either 12th St City Center or 19th St station, both of which are walking distance to the parade route and celebration site.
If you are arriving by Amtrak to Jack London Square, it is an 18min walk to the start of the parade, or you can catch the free Broadway shuttle which picks up at 2nd and Webster and drops you off on 12th and Broadway.
If you are being dropped off, please put your drop off location as 21st and Harrison which will leave you just one block from the celebration site.
If you MUST drive, please be aware that there is very limited parking as many public lots are closed for the weekend.
What to wear:
This Black Joy Parade 2020 theme is FREE YOUR JOY. The forecast looks bright and sunny and we encourage you to wear whatever brings you the most joy.
While there is no dress code, please keep in mind that this is a family-friendly event that lasts all day. We recommend bringing a layer or two for the evening once the sun sets. If you forget - no worry! We’ve got your covered with our official Black Joy Parade sweatshirts which can be purchased at the merch booth on the corner of 20th St and Franklin (right across from the Hennessy lounge).
