Black Ivy Events Inc. is a private company that caters to the social, professional and civic interests of alumni of color from the eight Ivy League institutions. Our social events bring together an exceptional community of discerning professionals. After more than a year of hosting successful events in New York, Black Ivy Events Inc. is expanding to Washington, DC!
Funxion, a new lounge in downtown DC, uses only clean filtered spirtis with the minimum of impurities. They use 100% juice mixers, fresh fruits, and veggies in their menu selection. The design and decor of Funxion reflect its philosophical values: freshness, environmentalism, fitness, and passion. Their earthy philosophy combined with the ultra modern steel and stone highlights creates an interplay of positive space and comfort. Our event will take place on the Mezzanine level. FEATURED ORGANIZATION: Reach Out and Read is an evidence-based nonprofit organization that promotes early literacy and school readiness in pediatric exam rooms nationwide by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud. Andrea Anderson, graduate of Brown University School of Medicine, will be present to provide more information on Reach Out and Read of Metro DC. They are currently looking for volunteers to read aloud to children in any one of their 35 local sites. If you have gently used children's books you want to donate, please send them! To learn more, visit their website. A portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to Reach Out and Read.
WAITING FOR SUPERMAN: For a nation that proudly declared it would leave no child behind, America continues to do so at alarming rates. Despite increased spending and politicians’ promises, our buckling public-education system, once the best in the world, routinely forsakes the education of millions of children. Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim undertakes an exhaustive review of public education, surveying “drop-out factories” and “academic sinkholes,” methodically dissecting the system and its seemingly intractable problems. To view the film trailer and find out how you can take action, visit www.waitingforsuperman.com.
